For your information Update on the Academic Standards Approval Process The 2007 versions of the South Carolina academic content standards in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics will be presented to the State Board of Education (SBE) for second reading and to the full Education Oversight Committee (EOC) in April 2007 rather than February 2007 as anticipated. Schedules for professional development, development of support documents, and classroom implementation will not be delayed.Read more . . . Math in a Grocery Store? Why teach children math only in the classroom when they can learn to use it in the real world? This is what students from Woodfields Elementary School did on February 6, 2007 as they enjoyed Family Math Night. This event was planned by the math coach and the faculty to encourage parental support. BI-LO graciously agreed to partner with the school and sponsor this event. Through out the store, parents and students from Pre K to fifth grade were invited to engage in math activities designed to integrate classroom learning into real life. When students and parents arrived at the store at 6 pm, they were given an enthusiastic greeting. Each family registered and received a booklet of activities which they were to complete together in the store. The event was made more special for the students because the store was decorated with balloons and teachers were stationed throughout to provide assistance. After the activities were completed, turned in and checked, each family enjoyed refreshments and received a generous bag of treats. This event brought out 180 students and approximately 400 total people, including parents. The success of this event was due largely to BI-LO being willing to serve as sponsor. BI-LO not only provided the location, they also provided the decorations, the refreshments, and an abundance of door prizes. The academic benefits of such an endeavor can not be overshadowed by the social entertainment. The coach and teachers decided to focus the activities on the two areas of math weakness as indicated by the MAP testing. The activities were designed by grade level teachers to address these weaknesses at their grade level and since we have a very large population of Hispanic students, every activity was translated so that parents and students could read and enjoy the event. Each student received activities targeting standards for their particular grade. These activities were returned to the students’ perspective teachers for review and feedback the following day. Students and teachers alike are still asking when we are going to do another event like BI-LO night. Students have really benefited from this type of activity. Math has become real to our students and not just a page from the book! |
