For your information New Mathematics Standards on the Horizon!As we plan lessons for our students and decide which activities might be best for the learners in our classrooms, one thing that currently guides our work more than anything else:  the S.C. Mathematics Curriculum Standards 2000.  The Curriculum Frameworks (1989) served as the basis for our current standards that were adopted in December 2000.  The current revision brings little change in content, but a major change in format.

State law requires feedback from all stakeholders during the standards review process.  This feedback began in April with the meeting of a state review panel of mathematics educators from across S.C.  This team scrutinized the current mathematics standards and provided feedback based on criteria established by the South Carolina Department of Education and Education Oversight Committee (EOC).  In accordance with the Standard Operating Procedure, the EOC appointed a national review panel of mathematics educators and leaders from across the country to evaluate the current standards and provide feedback, using the same criteria that were used by the state review panel. In addition, the Education Oversight Committee also appointed and secured feedback from community leaders, parents, and teachers of English language learners.  The EOC then prepared a report that combined the feedback from all stakeholders and made recommendations for revisions needed in the 2007 Academic Standards for Mathematics.  Once this feedback was compiled and available, the writing team was chosen and began working on a draft for our new mathematics standards.

As the team worked on the various strands of mathematics, the South Carolina Leaders of Mathematics (SCLME) provided feedback on the draft.  In addition, all draft work was sent to the Mid-Continental Regional Educational Laboratory (McREL) for editing and clarification.  The opportunity for everyone around the state to provide additional feedback is now. Currently, the draft 2007 Academic Standards for Mathematics are available on the State Department of Education website (ed.sc.gov click on “Curriculum and Standards” under “Educators”). You can provide feedback by completing an on-line survey at that site.  Field review will continue through November 29, 2006.

The draft will then be revised based on field review feedback. After revision, the draft will be submitted to the State Board of Education for first approval reading in January, to the Academic Standards and Assessment Subcommittee of the Education Oversight Committee for review, and then back to the State Board of Education for second and final approval in February 2007.

Changes in Format

As you examine the 2007 Academic Standards for Mathematics, you will notice the format is very different from the format of the current mathematics standards.  For each strand of mathematics, one overarching standard describes the mathematics to be learned for the grade level.  Under each standard, indicators of learning are listed.  The indicators represent the specific mathematical content that students must know and be able to do in order to meet the requirements of the standard.  The indicators have been written to reflect more differentiation among grade levels.  In addition, similar to the recently released science and social studies standards, all indicators are written with consistent verb use from the Revised Taxonomy for Learning and Teaching.
